Air conditioning for the elderly
Heat affects older bodies differently. As we age, the body's ability to regulate its own temperature naturally declines, and many common medications make it harder still. For families with an elderly parent or relative living with them, or living independently nearby, keeping their home cool during a heatwave isn't a just for comfort, it's for their safety.
Why heat is more dangerous for older people
People aged 85 and over have the highest heat-related death rate of any age group in England. During the summer of 2025, that age group recorded 364 deaths per million linked to heat, more than any other group tracked. The reasons are physiological, not just circumstantial: ageing reduces the body's ability to sweat efficiently, cardiovascular and kidney conditions become more common with age, and several widely prescribed medications, including some blood pressure and heart medications, interfere with how the body manages heat and fluid loss.

fans and open windows aren't always enough
A fan can help someone feel more comfortable, but it doesn't actually lower the temperature of a room, it only moves air around. Once a room is already hot, a fan has very little left to work with. Homes with someone aged 75 or over are currently less likely to have air conditioning (3.0%) than homes without anyone that age (4.6%), despite this being exactly the group most at risk. Much of the UK's older housing stock was built to hold onto heat through winter, which means it holds onto it just as effectively during a heatwave.

How we can help
We install air conditioning across Surrey and Dorset with a single focus: a reliably cool room, usually a bedroom or the room where most time is spent, fitted properly and explained clearly. You'll deal with the same engineer from the initial call through to installation and any aftercare, not a rotating team. Every quote is fixed before work begins, so there's no pressure and no surprises for a family making this decision on someone else's behalf.
If you're weighing this up for a parent or relative, we're happy to talk it through. No pressure, just a straightforward conversation about what would actually help. Get in touch for a callback.
FAQ’S
-
A fan can offer some relief but doesn't lower room temperature. Once a room is already hot, a fan just moves warm air around. For someone in a high-risk group, being able to reliably bring a room down to a genuinely safe temperature matters more than comfort alone.
-
Most single-room installations are straightforward. Get in touch and we'll talk you through timing for your specific property, particularly if you're weighing this up ahead of the warmer months.
-
A single-room split system install is generally a same-day job for most properties. We'll always explain exactly what's involved, and when, before any work begins.
