Air conditioning for newborns & babies
Newborns can't regulate their own body temperature the way adults or older children can. A nursery that feels warm to you can be genuinely uncomfortable, or in extreme heat, unsafe, for a baby. We install air conditioning across Surrey and Dorset to help keep a nursery at a steady, safe temperature through the summer months.
What temperature a nursery actually needs to be
NHS-based guidance puts the safe range for a baby's room at 16-20°C, with around 18°C generally considered the sweet spot. That's well below what most UK bedrooms reach during a heatwave, particularly rooms with south-facing windows or under a loft space. A thermometer in the room is the only reliable way to know, since a room can feel cooler than it actually is.

Why overheating is more of a risk for babies
Because babies can't sweat as efficiently as adults and can't move themselves away from heat or remove their own bedding, a hot nursery puts more strain on a newborn's body than the same temperature would on an adult in the next room. Days above 30°C have more than trebled across the UK since the 1960s, so a nursery built and furnished years ago may no longer sit at a safe temperature through summer without help.

Why a fan alone often isn't enough
A fan moves air around a room but doesn't lower its actual temperature, and NHS guidance specifically advises against pointing a fan directly at a baby. Air conditioning is the only reliable way to bring a nursery down to a genuinely safe temperature rather than just making the air feel like it's moving.

Modern inverter units run quietly, generally well below the noise level of a fan on a low setting. We can talk you through specific noise ratings for units we'd recommend for a nursery.
